Interestingly, I have found in a rather short space of time on Twitter, that social media can be a fast track to some good business relationships - with people who actually act - not just talk about it.

In a link I just retweeted from a new Follower/Leader is an article about a city council in Oregon preparing to pay for a social media manager. Perhaps Mayberry will have to catch up with what some sections of the business world are moving to position themselves within. Old ways of doing business, in a new context. I can see when I attend the local Twitter meetings that we've started running, that there is a definite divide happening, separating 'them in the know' and those who are oblivious to the changes that are happening.

I suspect that the Corporates will be on board and well entrenched, before the average small business owner notices something is happening. Yet this may not be the case. Right now, mainstream media is covering Twitter, and bringing it to the attention of Main Street. Something is abuzz. And fortunately, the doors are wide open to anyone who wants to get amongst it.

Budurl.com has a good service (free version too) that lets you see how many of your links are opened.

TwitterAnalyzer is excellent for seeing how far beyond your own Follwers your posts are tweeted too. It has other analytics and presented as graphs so easy to follow. So to speak. ;-)

Just have fun with Twitter is my advice.

Today I attended a local networking business event in my town, that I learned about on Twitter late yesterday evening.

On Thursday I have two new clients booked in for Outplacement coaching, thanks to a new friend on Twitter from a large recruiting firm.

Every day is sharing tips and comments and cool things to see or learn, from some marvellous people.

Friday we have a Twitter meeting in a local cafe, about half an hour from my house. All people I'd never have met if not for Twitter.

So I'd say it is a good opener. But it is a tool. The magic is in the relationships one builds with it.

Make it fun.

I hear you on this one, Kathy. That happened to me once --someone took information I posted on my blog and used it as their own with zero credit. You really feel like you've been "robbed" when that happens.

The converse of that is when someone uses your content (with your consent as you suggest) and gives you due credit. That makes you feel like a thousand dollars. I've been on that end, too.

Oh, well. There's a rotten apple in every bunch. Let's hope that conscience will eventually prevail.
